Mt. Joy is an indie rock band that emerged from the vibrant music scene of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The group was formed in 2016 by Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar) and Sam Cooper (guitar), who knew each other from high school in the Philadelphia area. The name "Mt. Joy" is derived from a mountain in Valley Forge National Park, near where Quinn and Cooper grew up. The band's lineup expanded to include Michael Byrnes (bass), Sotiris Eliopoulos (drums), and Jackie Miclau (keys) as they began to gain traction.
Mt. Joy's music quickly caught the attention of listeners with the release of their debut single, "Astrovan," in 2016. This track, along with subsequent releases, showcased the band's knack for crafting infectious indie rock with folk influences, marked by introspective lyrics and catchy melodies. Their sound has been compared to the likes of The Lumineers, Vance Joy, and Mumford & Sons, blending elements of folk, rock, and soul.
The band's self-titled debut album, "Mt. Joy," was released in 2018 to critical and commercial success. It featured hits such as "Silver Lining" and "Jenny Jenkins," which further solidified their place in the indie music scene. Following their debut, Mt. Joy has maintained a rigorous touring schedule, performing at major festivals and venues across the United States and beyond. Their live performances are known for their energy and the connection they establish with their audience.
In 2020, Mt. Joy released their second album, "Rearrange Us," which demonstrated a growth in their sound and lyrical depth. The album explores themes of change, love, and loss, further showcasing the band's evolution. As they continue to make music and tour, Mt. Joy remains a band to watch in the indie music landscape, beloved for their heartfelt songs and dynamic live shows.
