Genres
Morris Day and The Time is a legendary American music group that was formed in 1981 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The band was created by Prince and consisted of several of his childhood friends. The original members included Morris Day as the lead vocalist, Jesse Johnson on guitar, Terry Lewis on bass, Jimmy Jam on keyboards, Jellybean Johnson on drums, and Monte Moir on keyboards. Their music style is primarily a blend of funk, rock, and soul, often described as 'Minneapolis sound'.
The group's first album, "The Time," was released in 1981, with all songs written by Prince, although the band was credited. Their second album, "What Time Is It?" (1982), featured the hit single '777-9311'. However, it was their third album, "Ice Cream Castle" (1984), that brought them mainstream success, with two of the tracks, 'Jungle Love' and 'The Bird,' featured in Prince's film, "Purple Rain".
Due to creative differences and tensions, the group disbanded in 1984. They have since reunited several times and continued to release albums, the most recent being "Condensate" (2011) under the name The Original 7ven. Despite their tumultuous history, Morris Day and The Time remain an iconic part of the 80s music scene and have left an indelible mark on the world of funk and rock music.
