Cap'n Jazz
Meet Cap'n Jazz – an iconic American rock band that made waves during their brief but influential career! Formed back in 1989 by brothers Tim Kinsella (vocals) and Mike Kinsella (drums), along with Davey von Bohlen on guitar and Sam Zurick playing bass, this group of friends from Chicago created some truly memorable indie-rock tunes before calling it quits just five years later.
Their sound was unique; blending elements of emo, punk, jazz, and pop to create something fresh and exciting. Their songs were full of energy, raw emotion, and intricate melodies that captured hearts across America. Some fans even call them pioneers who helped shape what would become known as "emo" or "midwest emo."
Despite only releasing one studio album titled Burritos, Inspiration Point, Fork Balloon Sports, Cards In The Spokes, Automatic Biographies, Kites, Kung Fu, Trophies, Banana Peels We've Slipped On And Egg Shells We've Tippy Toed Over (yes, quite a mouthful!) plus several EPs and singles, they left behind a lasting impact within the underground scene. Songs like "Little League," "Oh Messy Life," and "In the Clear" are still cherished today among those familiar with their work.
After disbanding in 1995 due to creative differences, members went off to pursue other musical projects such as Joan Of Arc, Owls, Make Believe, Owen, and more recently, They Are Gutting A Body Of Water—all bands you might want to check out if you enjoy Cap'n Jazz's style.
Though reunions have happened over time — including performances at festivals like Coachella and Riot Fest — there hasn’t been any new material released since their original run ended nearly three decades ago. Still, thanks to streaming services and word-of-mouth recommendations, people continue discovering these talented musicians every day.
So next time someone asks about great alternative groups from yesteryear, don't forget to mention our beloved Cap'n Jazz. With catchy hooks, heartfelt lyrics, and unforgettable live shows, they remain legends in many circles despite being gone too soon.
